Mistissini’s grocery store Meechum Red’g once again has its annual charity drive underway to help spread holiday cheer to the community’s neediest families.
According to Meechum’s Beverly Quinn, there are three ways to help those in need this season. The annual “angel tree” is already up within the store for those looking to purchase a toy for a needy child who might not receive one otherwise. Those looking to participate can select an “angel” off the tree that features the age and gender of the child and purchase an age-appropriate gift for them that Meechum will include in that family’s Christmas basket.
Cash donations are also welcomed as all proceeds go to providing gift vouchers that families can use to purchase groceries for the holidays and throughout the year. As Christmas comes but once a year but the need doesn’t end on December 26, Meechum also uses the remaining funds to help needy families the other 364 days of the year through vouchers when they are needed.
New this year is a special fundraising campaign targeted at Mistissini’s hockey fans as the store will also be raffling off hockey tickets to see the Boston Bruins take on the Montreal Canadiens on January 8. The tickets were donated by Mistissini’s Caisse Populaire and the winner will enjoy the game in the luxurious Desjardins booth at the Bell Centre. This package includes gas money, two nights in a downtown Montreal hotel and $500 in spending money. The total prize value is worth $2000.
Tickets can be purchased at $5 each and $20 per booklet. The draw for the hockey package will take place on December 31.
