The 34th annual Cree Regional Events and Entertainment (C.R.E.E.) Senior Hockey and Broomball tournament took place December 4-7 at the Centre Air Creebec in Val-d’Or. Featuring teams from Ontario, Quebec and one all the way from Nunavut, men and women battled it out on the ice in Women’s recreational broomball, Women’s hockey and competitive broomball along with Men’s A, B1, B2 and Old Timers 40+ divisions.
In Women’s Recreational Broomball first place went to the Pikogan Thunder, second to the Lac Simon Lakers and third to Rapid Lake. The Waswanipi Flames and the Mistissini North Lights took fourth and fifth place respectively.
In the competitive Women’s Broomball division the Wemindji Ice Stars took first place honours, beating out the Waswanipi Eagles 4-3 in a tight final game. The Nemaska Capitals beat the Waskaganish Starlites 3-1 to claim third place and Lac Simon Women finished in the fifth spot followed by the Lac Simon Algonqueens, the Mistissini Glaciers and the Chisasibi Northstars.
Women’s hockey saw the Val-d’Or Iceholics beat out Mistissini Mustangs 1-0 in a tight, low scoring final game, third place went to the Wemindji Lady Wolves, fourth to Pikogan, fifth to the Waskaganish Panthers, sixth to Manawaki, seventh to the Oujé Lady Hawks and eighth to Lac Simon.
Men’s B1 division hockey ended with a high scoring 6-4 victory by the Mistissini Chummys over the Waswanipi Drummers, with the Waskaganish Hawks, Pikogan Youth and Manawaki Stars taking the third, fourth and fifth positions.
In men’s B2 hockey action the Winneway Hawks brought home first place with a convincing 8-3 victory over the Chisasibi Silver Bullets. The Lac Simon Penguins finished in third, the Waswanipi Underdogs in fourth and Rapid Lake in fifth.
The Val-d’Or Old Timers earned first place in Old Timers 40+ competition, edging out the Wemindji Paint Hills 4-2 in the final. The Chisasibi Relics finished in third place and the Waskaganish Ex-Wings in fourth.
Class A action featured some tough competition with the Waswanipi Chiefs winning first place over the Wemindji Wolves by a final score of 4-1. The Ottawa Renegades finished in third, Rouyn Bar O’Tooles in fourth and the Nunavik Ummimaks in fifth. Other teams competing in the Class A Division included the Waskaganish Wings, Moose Factory Scrappers, Eastmain 9ers and the Chisasibi Hunters.
