While their funding agreement for the research project they have been conducting over the past five years has not been renewed, the Native Women’s Association of Canada’s Sisters In Spirit is still hopeful that it might be reborn in moving from research to action.
For the last five years SIS has conducted integral research that has identified over 520 cases of missing and/or murdered Aboriginal women that has been funded through the federal government’s Status of Women agency.
Though SIS’s research is not being renewed by the feds, NWAC is hopeful that they can play a role in seeing their research used for change.
“We are now ready to move from evidence to action and are confident of the continuation of the work of the Sisters In Spirit initiative,” stated NWAC president Jeannette Corbiere Lavell in a press release.
Corbiere Lavell also expressed her confidence in working with Helena Guergis, the Minister of State for Status of Women, in the hopes that the SIS initiative can move on to a second phase of work in implementing their findings derived over the last five years.
