The fifth edition of the Nemaska Golf Benefit held at the Belvedere Golf Club on August 2 was a resounding success with over 200 attending the golf tournament and supper and $115,000 being raised.
The proceeds from the tournament went towards the Albert Diamond Foundation as well as the Christopher Wapachee Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on youth programs. The Cree Nation of Nemaska contributed the sizeable sum of $40,000.
The president of this year’s event was Nemaska Chief Mathew Wapachee with guest speeches by Grand Chief Mathew Coon Come and NDP MP Romeo Saganash. The entertainment for the evening included local artists and musicians along with live painting and an auction for the artwork.
The Nemaska Golf Benefit started with the initial goal of raising $250,000 in five years. How things have turned out far exceeded this early goal with the benefit reaching $630,000 in four years.
Benefit organizer Robert Kitchen said, “This year’s benefit was the most successful one we have ever had.”
Now the Nemaska Golf Benefit has set its sights on reaching the million-dollar mark during the event’s eighth year.
