Music entertainment, workshops, contests, activities, a Pow Wow and a feast were all part of the 6th Annual CreeFest which took place in Cochrane, Ontario August 14-16.
Taykwa Tagamou First Nation, the town of Cochrane, the Mushkegowuk Council and Abitibi Projects joined together and organized three days of festivities that brought Elders, children, youth and artisans together to celebrate community spirit and culture.
On the first day, CreeFest held its opening ceremonies at 6pm followed by music and entertainment. Friday began at 10am with workshops, and at 6pm there were contests and activities for the people attending. On Saturday, there was a five-hour Pow Wow. Closing ceremonies began at 3pm followed by a community feast, activities and another music and entertainment-filled evening.
CreeFest welcomed over 1000 participants. “I am very pleased with our success,” said Kara Louttit, the events coordinator. “I have been hearing great things from people who traveled from as far up the coast as Hudson Bay to attend. It was challenging but ultimately an amazing experience for me.”
