Nova Scotia fishermen admit they’re nervous about a native threat to organize a lobster boycott. The Indian Brook First Nation say they’re going to ask Native casinos to boycott lobster caught by nonnatives in the area. Indian Brook is one of the other bands that didn’t sign a deal with the DFO. Indian Brook say they are considering the boycott since non-native fishermen are boycotting the starting up of a native fishery in St. Mary’s Bay. Atlantic Fishing Industry Alliance spokesperson Denny Morrow calls the lobster boycott a irresponsible move. Morrow said it could hurt commercial fishermen and the Atlantic lobster industry.
Frank Thomas, a band member at Indian Brook, says the boycott could continue throughout the winter fishery but would stop once the DFO stopped seizing traps.
