Harry Wawatie, customary chief of the Barriere Lake Algonquins, says the blocking of the road by an Algonquin family has caused economic hardship for forestry workers and urged a quick settlement by all parties concerned. Wawatie said that the Barriere Lake community is looking for a peaceful and respectful co-existence. Wawatie said that his community has already signed a trilateral agreement with the government and forestry industry that they are happy with. Wawatie admitted that Jacob Wawatie and his family rejected the agreement but said that they represented a “very small number” of the members of Barriere Lake First Nation. Domtar, rumoured to be eager to resume cutting operations did agree to postpone resumption of its forestry operations in the Gull Lake sector until after a meeting Sept. 6.
