Waswanipi- On February 8th, 2004 at around 4:30 RM., the unthinkable happened. A 12-year-old child was passing by Judy Otter’s residence in Waswanipi when she heard what sounded like a body hitting the ground. She alertly called the local Police, who showed up a few hours later with social services.
Trevor Spencer, a 31-year-old non-local man who has been living in Waswanipi for less than a year, was found inside with his 2-1/2 year old stepson, Khayden Otter. The baby had suffered severe head trauma and was taken immediately to the local hospital and then flown to Montreal Children’s Hospital.
At press time the baby was in a coma and some community members feared long term damage. One, who wished to remain nameless, told the Nation that the baby’s mother, Judy Otter, met Spencer over the Internet last spring. By last fall they met in person and somewhere around that time agreed to marry.
Spencer is being charged with aggravated assault, and was scheduled to appear in court on February 18th, 2004.
