A LaSarre mechanic is on a marathon journey to raise funds for his local hospital: 7,000 kilometres by snowmobile – equal to one-fifth of the way around the planet.

Serge Racette, who was chief of security in the last two Raid des Braves races, started his trip in LaSarre and headed through the coastal Cree communities, continuing through Nunavik and Labrador.

“It’s harder than playing bingo, but I think it’s a trip that will save my life. It’s sure that I’ll come back from a trip like this having won – from the people I met, the things I saw, my experiences,” Racette explained before heading out.

He doesn’t want to stay in hotels, but in people’s homes. “I want to see how Native people live so I can explain it better to others,” said Racette, who plans a book on the trip, expected to take 50 days.

Donations will go to buy a CAT scanner for the hospital, which Racette said Quebec refuses to fund. His target: $600,000.
