The Cree Diabetes Network is asking all Crees to take part in the annual Sadie’s Walk this June 19 to promote solidarity with people who have diabetes.
This year, the walk will also honour the memory of Mavis Verronneau, a health worker who did much to educate Crees about the illness.
Community members will be asked to walk seven kilometres. Sadie’s Walk is named after Sadie Muik, a British Columbia health worker who dedicated her life to diabetes. She died on Good Friday, in 1996.
The walk’s goal is to show people with diabetes that the community is standing with them, and that by working together and walking together Crees can prevent diabetes in future generations.
