This year’s hockey season may be long over in the Cree Nation, but the most important part of the season for Stephan Gunner and Delmer Moses, both 13, happened just recently. Gunner, from Mistissini, and Moses, from Waskaganish, participated in the Canadian AAA Hockey Challenge in Edmonton June 27 to July 2.

The talented peewee players played for a team based in Montreal who captured the gold-medal championship game in the premier AAA tournament in Canada.

The boys joined the team, called Performe Plus, after a coach saw Gunner play in one of his many tournaments down south. The team’s scout approached him and asked if he was available and interested in joining their team for their next tournament. He said yes.

To make Gunner feel comfortable playing out west, the coaching staff offered to invite one of his friends to join him. And that’s when Gunner invited Moses to be an addition to his new team.

Both of them played really well and were a nice fit with the team as they helped bring the Canadian Challenge Cup to the province of Quebec.

Gunner accumulated the most points for the tourney with 21. He also won MVP honours.

The boys were again victorious in the peewee division of the Super Summer Classic Hockey Tournament in Rhode Island July 22-25.

Both boys want to thank all their sponsors for making this tourney possible for them to participate in.
