History is catching up with Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the U.S.

A campaign to remove Jackson’s face from the U.S. $20 bill is picking up steam.

Meanwhile, the Tuscarora First Nation of North Carolina is gaining momentum in its campaign to change the name of US 74, also known as “Andrew Jackson Highway.”

“The name Andrew Jackson means nothing but misery to Indians,” said Robert Chavis, a Tuscarora vice-chief. “Andrew Jackson is no hero to us. He’s like Hitler. He’s a killer.”

Jackson, who liked to call Native people “uncivilized” and “savages,” signed the Indian Removal Act, which displaced over 100,000 Native people. Thousands of people died along the 2,000-km Trail of Tears.

Native people want US 74 renamed the American Indian Highway.
