According to Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Hélène Nepton, 29-year-old Benjamin Gunner was formally charged at the Amos courthouse on February 23 with two charges of assault and one charge of uttering threats to kill or poison an animal or bird.

The charges stem from an incident one day prior after Gunner barricaded himself within the home that he shares with his grandmother. Police were called to the scene at 269 Amisk Street in Mistissini at 3:00 am after Gunner apparently hit his grandmother in the face and then refused to leave the premises following the incident. During this time Gunner reportedly threatened to kill his grandmother’s pet bird.

While police were aware that there were three firearms located in the home, the weapons were not considered to be part of the incident. Gunner eventually surrendered to police at 1:00 pm. His grandmother’s injuries are being considered as minor.
