The Mistissini branch of the Cree Women of Eeyou Istchee Association devoted six days to the women of their community by holding a special women’s conference from March 4-8, followed by a day of outdoor activities at the local children’s camp.
The “Live, Love & Laugh Conference” featured a number of workshops by local women, for local women, focusing on everything from healthy relationships to healthy living.
“This conference is about gathering women from our community to talk about the issues that affect women. Our objectives are to not only empower women but also let them know that they are not alone as many of them will often think that it is ‘only me’ who is going through something like a partner cheating, addiction or a suicide,” said local association president Christine Petawabano.
Participants also indulged in massage services and spa services courtesy of Association, something Petawabano said that some community members had never experienced due to access or financial constraints.
“They were booked from 9:00 am right up until 8:00 pm,” said Petawabano.
This year is the second year that Mistissini hosted the event.
