Waneek Horn, of the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, and co-captain of the Canadian Women’s National Water Polo Team, helped lead her team to win a gold medal at the Pan American Games just held in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

They won all their games, along with the gold medal game against the United States on July 30. Waneek scored three goals.

Waneek, 23, is the youth representative on the board of the Canadian Alliance in Solidarity with the Native Peoples, and has been prominently involved in Native youth issues most of her life, including being at the compound in Oka that was surrounded by the Canadian army in 1990. She was allegedly stabbed in the chest by a soldier while protecting her 4-year-old sister. She carries a scar over her heart from this attack.

But she managed to put it all behind her. Waneek just finished Carieton University with a degree in political science and at the
same time went on to develop into one of the world’s best water polo players.

She is currently fundraising for her trip to Australia for the Olympic Games in the year 2000. For more info call (450) 638-9659.
