Sexual-abuse charges have been laid against the new priest of the Innu community of Sheshatshiu, Labrador.
Innu people say the arrested priest was part of a much bigger problem of sexual abuse by religious authorities in the community.
A meeting was planned at which Innu were invited to tell their stories.
“We hope the people will have enough confidence to make a joint complaint about sexual abuse by priests,” said Peter Penashue, President of the Innu Nation.
Penashue said such abuse has been widespread for a long time.
“The whole thing probably started when the first priest showed up at our doorstep a couple of hundred years ago,” he said.
“This will be difficult for them (the people). It’92ll be hard. It will be scary. For some people it’92ll be like going up against God.”
