Citing a report by Sheila Fraser, Canada’s Auditor General, the Quebec Native Women’s organization calls for an overhaul of existing federal funding practices to prevent violence in Aboriginal communities.
Published May 7, the Auditor General’s report denounces existing federal programs for First Nations child and family services. The report highlights a chronic underfunding of these programs, whose budgets have not evolved since 1988.
Fraser’s report also exposes a discriminatory bias against Aboriginal families where a large proportion of children are removed and placed with non-Aboriginal families.
QNW also stresses the need to direct a larger amount of funding towards the prevention of violence in Aboriginal communities, instead of focusing funding on child placements.
Quebec Native Women Inc. is a non-profit organization advocating on behalf of Quebec Native women since 1974.
