GP G A PIM 7 2 4 14 Helen Gunner has a chance that others only dream about. She has been offered a athletic scholarship at Holy Cross College just outside of Bosten. It is for a NCAA tier 1 division women’s hockey scholarship and gives her a chance to be noticed by national and international women’s hockey teams. Her father Ronnie Gunner is proud of his daughter and told us that she loves hockey. Helen said her interest in the game came early. “My brothers were playing and I wanted to also,” she told the Nation.

She was offered a chance to play on the Cree Nation Bears but on the advise of her father turned it down. “I didn’t think it would be good for her to play contact,” he said. Gunner also told the Nation he was proud that his daughter didn’t drink alcohol, use drugs or smoke. “She is focused on her game,” he said.

Helen feels that Holy Cross will help her work on her weaknesses in hockey. During the summer she jogs and rollarblades. She would like to do weightlifting but says she doesn’t have enough experience to know what she is doing.

The school offers more than just hockey for Helen. Holy Cross is one of the top prep schools in the United States. Will Holy Cross is one of the top liberal arts schools in the US it prepares you to go on to Harvard, Yale or any of the top universities in the world. Most of the students go on to earn their doctorates.

Helen told the Nation that she expects Bosten to be a real change for her. “It’s a change in environment for me. I have always gone to school here in Mistissini and when I’m there I will be living on campus. I’m not sure what to expect,” she said.

Helen says she wants to acknowledge all the people who have given her support, especially her parents and to thank her friends for their encouragement.

Two favorite quotes Helen would like to share with you: “Success isn’t something you chase. It’s something you have to put forth the effort for constantly; then it’ll come when you least expect it.”

“And to accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan but believe…”
