In an effort to raise funds for a Leukemia patient Andy Iserhoff of Mistissini, Wally Rabbitskin, an uncle of Andy, underwent a challenge and ran 89 km’s from Mistissini to Chibougamou to come to the financial aid of his nephew.
Andy was diagnosed with Leukemia last year and has been receiving treatment in Montreal since, and funds were hard to come by so in an effort to maintain that support for Andy, devoted family members embarked on a journey to commit themselves to raising funds for the Leukemia patient. Wally ran solo on August 24 and committed family members set out to get names on sponsor sheets. Local entities and organizations also made their contributions. Not only were there devoted family members but 3 friends of Andy, Gloria Blacksmith, Lucy Trapper, and Sophie Matoush also raised funds by walking 16 km’s from Mistissini to Perch River on August 25. The total funds raised for Andy was almost $3,000.
This is the 2nd run made by Wally to help his family in crisis. In 1989 Wally ran the same distance for his sister who suffered a stroke and was in a coma for 6 months. At that time Wally raised $6,000.00. His first run in 89’ took him 7 hours and 33 minutes from Mistissini to Chibougamau. This 2nd run was also an accomplishment for the runner of Mistissini, he set a new record for himself by running the same distance in 6 hours and 50 minutes.
