Cyber-stalking could happen to you.
As a cyber friend of mine could attest. Well call her “Sara.” Sara, like Kachine, is another friend I met on the Internet.
Even though her job is Internet-related, and she is Net-savvy, she still had fallen victim to a stalker.
It is true that that you get out what you put into it. GIGO still holds true… Garbage In Garbage Out. Or in a less polite way… BIBO… You figure it out. A lot of people expect world peace to break out when they log online especially when they log on to the chat rooms.
Chat is the CB radio of the Internet. A whole lot of communication about a whole lotnothing. You will have to weed through a lot of junk before you find any qualitycontent or friends. But it’s still fun if you don’t mind waiting. World Wide Wait indeed. But I digress… Anyway be careful of the information that you give out on the Net.Names, phone numbers, email… etc. Here is my Net interview with “Sara.”
Sara: Hello again!!
Iyiyuu: k let me start…
Sara: ok
iyiyuu: I did cyber romances last issue with Kachine and Dune Sara: avvwww…. how nice Sara: cool…
iyiyuu: so now I want to do something on the horror of the net. iyiyuu: so people will be aware of the dangers
Sara: yeah… that’s really, really good… iyiyuu: there are a lot of newbies Sara: yep…
Sara: and they are going to be swallowed… if they don’t watch out iyiyuu: going on the chat rooms… you know how people can be… well you know Sara: yep
iyiyuu: so tell me about your experience Sara: it’s been hard for me to stay here…
I am only here to talk to family now., iyiyuu: you mean the NAC (Native American Chat) family?
Sara: no… my real family… I have family on here iyiyuu: oh cool
Sara: so anyway… just downloaded the software to save on long distance… Sara: and my aunt downloaded too…
Sara: I sell Internet services… and sold to everyone in my family Sara: I used to chat years ago… I have been on the net a long time…
Sara: but I hated it… the talk… the people… it was too phony Sara: so anyway… I didn’t load it…
Sara: met a lot of people from here and there…
iyiyuu: it is the CB radio of the net Sara: yep
Sara: not really talking to anyone iyiyuu: but you were hooked?
Sara: no… far from it…
Sara: see my family got hooked bad… Sara: and I would get on… get bored… and leave
Sara: my family and I would meet here. Sara: so anyway… I don’t really like the way people talk on here.
Sara: but… I met this one guy… from San Fran
Sara: and I have a cousin down there…
so we started talking… and stuff Sara: I used to come to talk to my family… cause everyone else always wanted to cyber iyiyuu: cyber?
Sara: well you know…
iyiyuu: not everyone does
Sara: wanted to have cyber sex…
Sara: and I really think that people’s lives are so sad if that’s all they get on here for…
iyiyuu: otherwise known as one-handed typing?
Sara: haha Sara: good one
Sara: but… I met this guy… and he wanted my email….
Sara: and he gave me his and asked if we
could keep in touch…
Sara: and that I seemed really nice Sara: and he would email me all the time…
Sara: telling me about his life…
Sara: everything… about his life…
Sara: from his bad marriage… to his child… to his work… to school…
Sara: everything…
Sara: and I think my mistake was listening to him…
Sara: and telling him really? oh yea? and stuff like that
Sara: cause I think a lot of people that get on here are looking for that iyiyuu: did it progress?
Sara: but one day he asked for my phone number
Sara: and I don’t know why I gave it to him… I wanted to hear his voice I think Sara: but at the same time I wanted to tell him how busy my life was and stuff like that
Sara: he was almost 10 years older than me… and I didn’t think anything Sara: cause you think these people are way too far to do anything to you iyiyuu: was it scary?
Sara: yes it was
Sara: but it was my cell phone # I gave him and I knew that I was going to change it
Sara: but anyhow… he called Sara: and he told me how nice my voice sounded and how nice I was… and stuff like that
Sara: and I couldn’t go into VP (Virtual Places) without him IM’ing (instant message) me…
Sara: and he would then ask if he could call me
Sara: I changed my number…
Sara: I think it was because I couldn’t be assertive…
Sara: you know tell him… leave me alone and stuff
Sara: but anyway I changed my name in VP
Sara: I changed my cell phone #
Sara: I blocked him from sending me email
Sara: well I blocked his email address Sara: and then I thought that would be it Sara: but he phoned Regina Directory Sara: and got my home #
Sara: my address…
Sara: he sent me a card and his picture Sara: with kisses all over it Sara: and he told me that he wanted to fly to Calgary
Sara: and what scared me… was that
Sara: I knew he had the money to do it if he wanted Sara: and he now knew where I lived Sara: and my phone #
Sara: I even had nightmares of him walking up to me when I was walking into my home Sara: or knocking on my door Sara: my roommate was more scared than I was Sara: but when he first called I seen a different # on the caller ID…
Sara: and I let my voice mail pick it up
Sara: and then he said Sara: Sara… I miss you… what’s wrong… did I do something wrong… I am sorry… please talk to me Sara: man it was prettty scary Sara: he would call all hours of night…
Sara: all day…
Sara: and I didn’t want to change my #
Sara: I looked at his picture and I thought… what a sad
man…
Sara: but it was back in October
Sara: weil I will try to remember more…
Sara: I have to run Sara: see ya later… iyiyuu: k thank you iyiyuu: cya Sara: ok….
